The 2025/26 edition of the CAF Champions League officially kicks off this weekend 19-21 September 2025 with over 30 preliminary round matches taking place across the African continent.
Closer home in the Horn of Africa, in Kenya, history will be on the cards as Kenya Police FC take on Somalia's Mogadishu City Club in their two legged tie set across dates 20 and 28th September 2025.
The first leg clash takes place Saturday 20 September at the Nyayo Stadium from 4 PM.
The two sides qualified for the Champions League by virtue of winning their country's respective national leagues. With kick off less than 36 hours away, some pieces of history will be made come matchday.
- It will be the first time that Kenya Police FC take part in the CAF Champions League. Last season, they took part in the CAF Confederations Cup, also for the first time in their history.
- It will be the first time that a Kenyan and Somali side battle in the modern day era of CAF Champions League football. Somali sides have generally not participated in CAF competition, thanks to a long time absence from continental action due to political instability back at home.
- It will be the fifth time that Mogadishu City Club participate in the CAF Champions League. They were previously called Banadir Sports Club, which participated in the CAF Champions League back in 2013,2017,2018 and 2020 as Mogadishu City Club.
- It will be the first time that Mogadishu City Club and Kenya Police face in a competitive match.
- It will be the first time that a Burundian national takes charge of a Kenyan side in the CAF Champions League with head coach Etienne Ndayiragije in charge of the Kenya Police FC side. Given the historical context of the match and the fact that it will pit two neighbouring countries with lots of shared history makes it an exciting match ahead especially for Mogadishu City coach Daadir Ali, who expects the fact that the two sides are so close to each other to be a factor come match day.
